So you started your business. And you know damn well that the gold is found when you stand out online. Getting known for your unique flavour, being different. Certainly NOT blending in.
Then inevitably you started looking around. Checking out websites. Following inspirational leaders in your field. Reading lots of content that isn’t yours. Snooping around on other people’s work with me pages.
You see stuff that seems to be really working (you know stuff the REALLY successful people are doing).
Pushing the boundaries with swear words.
Using that cool opt in button in the shape of a circle.
Starting a free Facebook Group.
Running a business to business mastermind.
Deleting their one on one offerings.
And before you know it, you start talking like them. Writing like them. Running your business like them.
Maybe you use their work as a template for creating YOUR business dreams.
Maybe you even get some “creative inspiration” from their sales pages (to date I have had sales pages copied almost verbatim on two separate occasions that I know of). It’s not copying per se, you’re just checking out what others are doing, right?
You’re trying so hard to stand out, you just start to blend in. And there goes your real edge. TWEET IT!
In reality, trying too hard to stand out, and letting your business decisions be heavily influenced by other online entrepreneurs is costing you clients, cash and your divine creativity. And here’s why that’s a big fat problem:
1) By definition, you can’t create the business (of life) you are meant to deliver using some one else’s style / language / business model / way of being.
2) The clients who are a perfect match for you are seeking your UNIQUE mix of superpowers. Until you bring them to the world unadulterated and influenced by others, you can’t fill that gap. So you both lose.
3) When you are listening so much outside of yourself you ain’t listening to the ONLY voice who knows best – yours.
So how the heck do you navigate online entrepreneurship, maintain your true individuality AND build a profile that stays innately true to you?
Well, first of all stop bloody digesting so much stuff that is not your creation!
And then, ask yourself these questions:
What do I truly value personally and what do I most want to deliver to the world?
What are my own unique superpowers?
How do I help my clients?
How can I best serve my clients AND myself and in what format do I wish to deliver this?
(YES! it IS possible to be deeply respectful to your clients and to honour yourself. No, despite all those “you gotta work hard to earn money” BS beliefs you may have heard, taking care of yourself and creating a healthy income are not mutually exclsuive ).
What feels out of alignment in my business right now? What do I need to surrender to shift towards more alignment?
And finally the 64 million dollar question:
Where in my business am I trying so hard to stand out, I am blending in?
