“Hello, gorgeous. It’s Kylie here from kyliepatchett.com. Welcome to another episode of bullshit busting.
Okay, today we’re going to be chatting about how to avoid burnout while building your business because this is something that is incredibly close to my heart – mainly because when I was building my own biz, I wasn’t paying attention to this sort of stuff lead myself into a drain or exhaustion at the end of last year.
Also, because I believe that business and brilliant, brilliant health and vitality and presence with your family are not mutually exclusive.
Today’s blog is about how to build business without killing yourself first.
Now, if you’ve been reading along with me over the past few weeks you’ll know what my thoughts are about the whole debacle, stupidity conditioning that we’ve all being handed or most of us have been handed that says you have to work hard to make money.
I just don’t believe that to be true anymore, now don’t get me wrong. I used to, I used to work myself into the ground because the high achiever in me likes to get things done and earn a serious paycheck and be the responsible chick and all of that stuff that is actually all external motivation.
Now, when you can tap in to your own super powers and of course learn some strategic stuff and the practical stuff of running a business. The most important other part of the puzzle is to make sure that your self care is intact. N
ow, most of you would know that I started my career as a biologist and then a medical scientist and then when I first started coaching I was actually a health coach.
A cycle of overworking, overdelivering, undercaring
Now, the irony is not lost on me that even as a health coach by the end of 2013 I had created a cycle of overworking, overdelivering, undercaring for myself that created a drain or fatigue. I was burnt out.
For those of you who don’t know what that is it’s basically when you’re hormones and the adrenal glands that sit on top of your kidneys get all out of whack and it creates in extreme cases sleeplessness, anxiety, lack of energy, not being able to catch your day without yawning or being a crazy person with extremes of flat and flatter moods.
There was no up, just flat, flat, flat and more flat. Really, I realized how much I had been running on empty for such a long time probably about 18 months of running on energy, pushing too hard, always striving, always wanting the next goal, always achieving.
The other thing I see so often and it was definitely a problem for me was that women entrepreneurs we used to train ourselves to always strive and the thing that we forget is that just like the ebb and flow of everything in nature, strive means that there has to be equal time to surrender, to rest, to relax, to allow the art of allowing practice the art of allowing.
To allow things to find you and to magnetize to you in a much more feminine way of bing the world. A much more feminine way of treating yourself and a much more feminine way of trusting that the universe has indeed got your back.
Why self care is crucial to your sanity and wellbeing
Let’s talk about the fundamentals of self-care, because this is so relevant to preventing you from burning out.
Now, here’s an absolute no negotiable way of looking at your health. Just say you’re in business to create income, independence, freedom, travel, self-actualization, the ability to work from home, whatever it is.
It is absolutely true to say that your energy, the energy that you bring to the table when you’re talking to clients, when you’re writing blog post, when you’re out and about, amongst the market place, being your true self is totally affected by how well you’ve been taking care of yourself.
I mean energy as far as your physical vitality but also the bigger picture of energy which is how you come across to people, what language you use, whether you’re smiling or radiant or whether you look like you’re being dragged over the coals and the cats dragged you in, all of that will go into whether a client will see you as an expert or someone that they want to work with or someone that they don’t.
That’s the real truth so when you think that working hard is the only thing you got to do to make money you’re missing a fundamental piece of the puzzle. TWEET THE TRUTH BABY!
Let’s talk about self-care in very, very broad brush stroke terms.
First of all I would love to say that by the bare, bare, bare minimum of taking care of yourself your body which is an animal which we kind of forget these days but your body is an animal and it has needs.
Some of the most fundamental needs are clean food, moving your body, touch and connection, the people, they are fundamental things that you must have.
Now, we don’t have time in this blog post to talk about food and all the bits and pieces and fine detail but really suffice to say you need fresh food, whole food the best one that you can possibly afford and also local is ideal.
Move your body (shake that bootay)
Moving your body, make sure that you move your body everyday. Again, youre animal, your body requires movement.
It’s not something that you need to book into your calendar to say, “Today is Tuesday, therefore I go to the gym.”
You should be feeling your way through energy and movement as a very basic way of creating vitality and creating focus and creating that beautiful feeling like you’re actually in flow in your business. As far as connecting with other people, one of the things that I see over time is that people actually look for connection only within my business so they create this beautiful business and then the business actually becomes the thing that they look to for everything that they need in their life.
Connection, motivation, sense of achievement, a sense of play, a bit of fun, connection with other people online which is all very well and good and it can be all of those things but here’s the thing …
It’s like getting married or going out with a new partner and expecting them to be the one that fulfills all of your needs.
It’s not fair on any person to expect that. It’s also not fair to expect your business will fulfill all your needs. I encourage you to create time to connect with real life people like your family, your friends, the people in your community that you could go and connect with instead of making more and more time in front of that computer screen or more and more time speaking to clients.
You’ve got to create connection outside of that.
The other two really, really essential things in self care is make space for quite time and down time everyday whether it’s a simple breathing practice, a quiet time ritual, a meditation, I highly recommend.
I’ll put a link underneath this interview, Sarah Brooke who has this most beautiful meditations, they are available on iTunes and through her website and I’ll link them underneath this article.
I use them as a guide of meditation, 20, 22 minutes anytime during the day that you feel like you’re lacking clarity or you need a little bit of a brain dump or chill out time. Plug your iPhone, headphones in or headphones in and relax and allow your body and your mind to just sync in to that art of allowing.
The other thing is pleasure time, fun, get out into the world and have some fun.
Do something that lights you up that’s not anything to do in your business and for the love of God stop taking your phone everywhere. I’m a really, really, really bad offender of this, taking my phone everywhere. My kids actually required me one school holidays to take all social media off my phone.
Some of it has snuck back in but I will say that I like the little trick of turning off your cellular data. Even if you do have social media, apps on your phone, instead of going for a run or a walk and spending half the time posting things to Instagram or instead of making a lunch and posting to Instagram or giving update on Facebook, stay disconnected and just have fun with the people right in front of you or with yourself.
Go, go for an amazing walk or go and see some new scenery or go and explore somewhere or head out like I did this morning into your own community. I live in this beautiful place called Maleny in the sunshine coast hinterland of Australia.
I headed into town this morning because I had a little hankering for fresh sourdough bread so I went for my big, long walk and I pop myself in the car and drive into town and I found the most amazing sourdough and I met the man who baked it who lives in a village not too far away from mine called Crystal Waters.
I met the man who baked my bread and I had a conversation with him, I picked up the packet, it was in a brown paper bag, picked up the packet and still warm.
I got to spend a couple of minutes of human connection time laughing and joking with the bread man. Now, that might seem like a little tiny interlude to you but that kind of going out into the world and having a sense of wonder connecting with real people, having playfulness, all of that energy and vitality and radiance and amazingness that’s out there you bring home to your business.
What you are at risk of doing when you stay behind that computer screen is you get disconnected from not only everyone else but also from yourself.
Then also, please don’t forget that your business ideally it will be something that makes your heart sing and maybe if not all of it makes your heart sing, look at how to be able to integrate more of what you love to do and makes you feel like your soul is wagging it’s tail that’s the way I test this.
This is all of the stuff that you don’t like doing and as soon as you can outsource the crappy stuff that you don’t like doing. It may not be crappy stuff, it might just be something outside of your zone of genius. Be okay with taking care of your own general needs first and then showing up in your business second. The only way for you to show up as a person, as a coach, as a business owner, as a woman entrepreneur, as a mama, anyone out there, as a partner is to take care of your own needs. Please stop looking for your business to provide everything, please stop working and striving and driving yourself too hard and don’t you dare end up doing what I did and get so unbalanced that your little adrenal glands are going, “Kylie, help me.”
It’s time to pay attention to your own needs and avoid burning out
Then, please, please pay attention to your own needs. It is possible to deal with the business without killing yourself and prevent yourself from burning out.
It is time to practice radical self respect and if you won’t do it for yourself at least try an make it an absolutely kick ass strategy for allowing better focus, better productivity and much better energy bringing into your business and to your clients.
Until next time gorgeous. Thank you so much for lending me your ears or your eyeballs on this beautiful blog.
